(This review is for the PlayStation 4
version of the game)
Cities:
Skylines is a
city-building game developed by Colossal Order and published by Paradox
Interactive. Players in this game take the role of a city planner and create
their own cities from scratch. Players must make sure to keep crime low,
employment up, and keep the environment clean.
The overall goal of the game is to build a thriving metropolis without
going broke.
Cities:
Skylines is obviously a game for a niche market. If you like action or
sports games this game probably isn’t for you. However, if you like games that
involve problem solving and creating something than this game is right up your
alley. A problem I had to solve while playing the game was trying to figure out
why all my citizens were getting sick and dying in staggering numbers. I
quickly found out that I had placed my sewage treatment plant too close to my
water treatment plant causing the people in my city to get sick and die from
dirty drinking water. The most challenging thing players will have to deal with
during the course of gameplay is managing their city’s budget (before you start
your game you can choose to simply turn the budget off. Meaning you’ll be able to spend like a
drunken sailor and not have to worry about the consequences, just like the
federal government does). This game also brought out a real creative side of me
that I rarely use when I play games from other genres.
I have one major gripe with this game. There
isn’t really a thorough tutorial that teaches players the initial steps of the
game. The game simply assumes the player is already well versed in city
building games. I feel like the many problems that I had during the game like
alleviating traffic jams and plotting public transportation routes could’ve
been a lot less frustrating had a proper tutorial system been available.
Overall, I thought Cities: Skylines was tremendous game and I’m looking forward to
seeing if Colossal Order will be able to top themselves with their next game.
Overall Rating: ****
